Liz has worked for many years as a speaking examiner for international exam boards and is currently a local speaking examiner Team Leader. Her main areas of interest are pronunciation, testing and more recently focusing on error correction to promote both accuracy and fluency development.
The seminar is about:
Classroom Management

How we manage the learners and the learning environment is a key process in creating an effective learning experience for the learners. A student-centered approach to learning highlights the importance of learners interacting with each other in a variety of ways. In this practical workshop we will look at techniques (giving instructions, varying interaction patterns and conducting feedback) to encourage a learner-centered classroom.

Task-Based Learning

How often does any meaningful production get relegated to the last 5 minutes of your lesson, or even less because you've run out of time?

How can you ensure that learners are motivated to complete tasks not just to practise the target language, but because the task is motivating in itself?

How can we encourage learners to make use of all the language they know not just the target language for the lesson?

This session will help provide answers to these questions and show how TBL can be used to give learners the confidence to just try things, and how this teaching approach can help them see why they need the language and how they can use it.

Test-Teach-Test
As learners progress through the levels and with increased exposure to English outside the classroom through internet, social media, etc., they frequently come to class with some existing knowledge of the target language we are planning to teach. How can we make better use of this and how can we ensure that we teach the learners what they need to know about language rather than following the same prescriptive approach for all classes?

By making simple changes to our lesson sequences, we can integrate a more diagnostic approach to our teaching, allow learners to show what they know and cater for their needs.

Error Correction
Teachers can have very different attitudes to errors in te classroom. However if learners are given sufficient opportunities to be creative and experimental with their output then errors will be an inevitable and important part of the learning process. A skillfull teacher needs to be able to exploit errors to provide effective feedback for the learners. In this workshop we consider the nature of errors: when, how and who should provide correction. How can we most effectively provide feedback on learners oral and written production?
